TOEFL
The TOEFL is designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. It is primarily used by colleges and universities in English-speaking countries as part of the admissions process for international students.
Reading
- Duration: 54–72 minutes
- Format: This section consists of 3 to 4 passages, each about 700 words long. Test-takers read these passages and answer a total of 30–40 questions, which may include multiple-choice, sentence completion, and short answer formats.
- Skills Assessed: The ability to understand main ideas, details, inferences, and the organization of the text, as well as vocabulary in context.
Listening
- Duration: 41–57 minutes
- Format: This section includes 4 to 6 listening passages, which may consist of conversations between two speakers or lectures given by a professor. Test-takers answer 28–39 questions based on the audio clips.
- Skills Assessed: The ability to understand spoken English, including the main ideas, details, speaker attitudes, and implied meanings.
Speaking
- Duration: 17 minutes
- Format: The speaking section consists of 6 tasks: 2 independent tasks (where test-takers express their opinions on familiar topics) and 4 integrated tasks (which require responses based on reading and listening).
- Skills Assessed: The ability to express ideas clearly and coherently, as well as the use of appropriate language and pronunciation.
Writing
- Duration: 50 minutes
- Format: This section has two tasks:
- Integrated Writing Task: Test-takers read a passage and listen to a lecture, then write a response that summarizes the points made in both.
- Independent Writing Task: Test-takers write an essay on a given topic, expressing their opinions and supporting them with reasons and examples.
Skills Assessed: The ability to organize ideas and write clear, well-structured essays in English.
